Residents in New Hope subdivision forced to wait another year for help

Posted: Updated:
DUNLAP, SEQUATCHIE COUNTY -

In early August state and Dunlap city leaders allocated $150,000 to help stabilize the properties in phase 3 of the New Hope subdivision. Residents were told work would be finished by late September but so far they say nothing has changed.

"What the hell are you waiting on? If you got the money, fix it," says resident Judy Duffy.

Fed up, that's how most residents living phase 3  feel. Nearly three years have passed since the original builder, Russell Meade, promised elderly home buyers new homes complete with paved roads, sidewalks, mailboxes, gutters and driveways.

Instead they've lived in and around a bunch of mud. "This is what $150,000 has got us so far, absolutely nothing," Duffy says.

She knows it'll get worse before it gets better. "Winter is coming. I don't know how we're going to get up that hill, I don't know how an ambulance is going to get up that hill," Duffy explains.

"Government does not move at a pace like some of us would like for it to move," says Dunlap Mayor Dwain Land. "The paperwork is caught up in the legal department of Tennessee Housing Rural Authority."

While the money is there Land says it may be awhile longer before help comes to the community.

"I'm still optimistic but I'm not sure that its going to make it before Spring," says Land. "I will continue to stay behind the paperwork, try to get that processed and get that into the hands of the Southeastern Development District."

Once the paperwork goes through he says contractors can be hired and the work can begin.
