Neighbors save man from burning home in Brainerd

Posted: Updated:

An ambulance rushed an elderly man from his burning home in Brainerd Tuesday afternoon. Fire officials say the fire broke out around 1:30 p.m.

"A little boy came to knock on my door from the neighborhood and asked me to call the police," says neighbor, Eborah Henderson.

Before firefighters arrived neighbors jumped into action. Tim McCoy was one of the first to rush into the thick smoke and flames. He knew the homeowner, an 85-year-old man, was inside.

"We covered our face up cause there was a large amount of smoke," McCoy explains.

Nearly blinded by fumes and smoke they began their search. "Just wasn't thinking, we rushed in, went through the house, seen him sitting there on fire. We got a towel and put it over his body and rushed him out," says McCoy.

Neighbors helped carry the man across the front yard. That's where fire crews found him with severe burns across the majority of his body. The man's wife, who also helped carry him out of the fire , was taken to the hospital with burns on her hands.

McCoy says he doesn't want to be called a hero, he was just doing his duty as a good neighbor and wants his message heard. "You have to pay attention to your neighbors, especially your elderly neighbors. Be aware of their situation and know when they're home and when they're not home," McCoy says.

Fire officials tell Channel 3 the elderly man will be flown to a burn center in Augusta, GA.
