Auditors presented Erlanger with a $7.9 million deficit for the 2013 fiscal year at the Budget and Finance Committee meeting Monday.

Erlanger officials originally anticipated the hospital might close out the year in the red with double digits.  But a generous refund from the Internal Revenue Service, collected FICA taxes from Erlanger and medical students from the University of Tennessee kept that from happening.

"That was a big boost for us," said Erlanger CEO Kevin Spiegel.

While hospital officials recognize the final report was average they commended their accounting staff for avoiding any surprises.

"Though the numbers aren't pretty, the numbers are accurate," committee chairman Donnie Hutcherson said after the auditors' presentation. "Hopefully when you stand up before us next year the numbers will be black."
