Judge reverses TN magistrate; infant's name will be Messiah not Martin

NEWPORT (News Sentinel) — A chancellor Wednesday ruled a magistrate was wrong to order a baby's first name changed from Messiah to Martin.

Cocke County Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew last month ordered — sans any request — the first name of 8-month-old Messiah changed to Martin, saying the name should be reserved for Jesus Christ.

The baby's parents had sought only to change the child's last name from the mother's surname of Martin to McCullough, the boy's father's last name.

The parents appealed the decision.
