Heritage softball rallies to stun top-ranked NW Whitfield

Posted: Updated:

RINGGOLD, Ga. (WRCB) -- Northwest Whitfield sent rival Heritage to the ropes with a seventh-inning barrage in Tuesday night's showdown of North Georgia powers, but the host Generals bounced back to deliver the stunning final blow.

After giving up three runs in the top of the inning, second-ranked Heritage rallied to score four runs in its final at-bat for a thrilling 6-5 walk-off win over the top-ranked Bruins.

Down 5-2 as they stepped to the plate in the seventh, the Generals pulled within one run on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk. Then with the bases still loaded, Brooklynn Frazier's chopper to short drew a poor throw to the plate that scored Kurston Henry with the tying run. As the ball skipped away from catch Bayli Cruse, Heritage's lone senior, Katie Pritchett, was also able to dive in as the winning run.

Cruse helped the Bruins take the lead with two run-scoring hits earlier in the game. The Northwest slugger tied the contest at 2-all with an RBI-single in the sixth before adding another in the seventh to give the Bruins a 3-2 lead.

Macy Weeks later added a two-run single in the top of the seventh to give Northwest the 5-2 advantage.

Lauren Lawson battled in and out of trouble to stay unbeaten at 14-0 on the year. She struck out four in a complete game effort while allowing just one earned run.

Lawson, Ali Roberts and Olivia Tamewitz each finished with two hits for the Generals (18-3, 5-0 in region play), who took advantage of four Northwest errors.

Cruse, Hannah Godfrey and Ashley Conner all finished with two hits for the Bruins (15-2, 4-1).
