Neighbor: Death of pedestrian affects community

A 50-year-old pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle Tuesday morning. Witnesses say the victim was running across the road when he was hit.

It happened just before 7 a.m. in the 3900 block of Bonny Oaks Drive. Michael L. Godwin of Chattanooga passed away shortly after being taken to the hospital.

Loved ones gathered at a home right off that intersection on Addison Road, but they were very emotional and didn't want to talk, so it's unclear if he lived there, or why he was on foot in that area Tuesday morning.

News of what happened has shaken the entire neighborhood.

"It's affects the community," neighbor Ethan Vines said, "seen flashing lights in the house and walked outside to see what was going on. I seen police cars and ambulances, and stuff right here in the road."

Chattanooga Police say witnesses reported seeing Godwin running across Bonny Oaks, at the same time a Ford F-150 was driving by.

"There was a truck that was traveling down the road, tried to swerve to avoid the pedestrian but was unable to," Chattanooga Police Officer Nathan Hartwig said.

Skid marks show where the driver of the truck swerved to try to miss him but was unable to.

"He was taken to a local hospital where he passed away as the result of his injuries," Officer Hartwig said.

"It hurts me and I'm praying for them," Vines said.

Neighbors say despite it being a busy road, there are a lot of people who walk along it every day and now more than ever, they want sidewalks and crosswalks put in.

"What if when my kids get older they got to go out there to meet the bus or what not, that could happen to them that early in the morning," Vines said.

The driver of the truck was visibly shaken. No charges have been filed. Police say so far evidence on the scene and witness accounts point to it being a tragic accident-- that the driver simply did not have time to stop once he saw the man in the road.

"It's still an ongoing investigation, so we don't have all the facts, but that's what it appears to be," Officer Hartwig said.

Bonny Oaks is a state road. TDOT says they do have plans to do an engineering study on it that could include widening and sidewalks, however, it does not stretch as far west as where Tuesday's accident happened. TDOT officials say they have not received any requests for sidewalks and crosswalks near the Addison Road intersection.
