Police arrest man in women's rest room stall attack

Posted: Updated:

Authorities have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the assault last month of a woman in a rest room stall at a Big Lots store.

Stacy Elijah Smith was charged with one count of attempted aggravated rape, according to Alcoa Police Department Capt. Dale Boring. Boring said Smith also is under probe by the Knoxville Police Department, but he did not specify the allegations.

Smith is from Maryville, police said, but recently has been staying at a Knoxville homeless shelter on Broadway.

Smith is accused of sliding under a woman's rest room stall about 5 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Big Lots in Alcoa. The assailant was armed with a hammer as he slid on his back up to his shoulders and tried to drag the 53-year-old Tellico woman into another stall, police said.
