Niota officers to receive thousands in back pay

Posted: Updated:

Two Niota police officers will receive thousands of dollars in back pay, in order to avoid a much steeper lawsuit.

Charges against officers Jonathan Scott and Keith McCarter were dropped last month, after being indicted in 2012 for allegedly beating a man during a traffic stop.

At Thursday's council meeting, the city of Niota agreed to pay the officers a split $72,000 for days they did not work, a tax increase for Niota residents.

A meeting is scheduled for Monday night to discuss the hike.
