A Chattanooga man wanted for attempted murder was arrested in Gordon County following a high speed pursuit Thursday.

Deputies reported they observed a suspicious vehicle Thursday night on I-75 near Calhoun.

They attempted to pull the vehicle over at which point the driver, Marcus Dewitt Smith, led them on a chase. Speeds reached an excess of 100 miles per hour and weaved across four lanes of traffic.

Smith lost control near Exit 317, left the interstate and cart wheeled end over end before coming to a stop in a culvert.

Deputies apprehended Smith as he tried to exit the car.

Officials discovered he was wanted for attempted first degree murder, robbery, and weapons violations.

He was treated for non life threatening injuries and arrested.

"I'm pleased that my deputies were able to quickly resolve a very hazardous situation and effect the arrest of a dangerous fugitive without injury to any innocent people. This man will now be returned to Tennessee authorities to face his charges there," says Sheriff Mitch Ralston.
