Witness gives first hand details of Marion County shooting

Marion County and state officials are working to identify a man killed in an officer involved shooting.

The Sheriff tells Channel 3, officers were responding to a call of a trespasser asleep on the porch of a home on Lock and Dam road.

When the deputy arrived, he heard a warning shot at the scene.

Dan Souther spent Saturday morning trying to relax out on the Tennessee River.

"[I was] drinking a cup of coffee, when I got interrupted by my dog," said Souther.

He says his dog was barking at an intruder.

"He was supposed to have been thrown out of a boat and was wet and cold and needed to go to the marina. I was assuming that his car was over there," said Souther. "[I] took him down on the golf cart, was going to take him across to the marina in the boat to drop him off and that's when things went bad," said Souther.

Souther says when they got to the dock, he began to prepare the boat, and before he knew it, he was in the water.

"I got shoved in and disarmed," said Souther.

Souther says he shot warning shots to scare the suspect into dropping the weapon.

That's when Souther says police showed up and the suspect ran into the woods with police not far behind.

"The person pointed the firearm at the officer and he used deadly force," said Sheriff Ronnie Burnett.

"I'm sorry the boy got killed over it," said Souther.

Souther says he's just thankful he and his wife are ok and will think twice before helping someone out.
"Never trust anyone. Even when they look down and out from having a bad day, you've got to be more careful," said Souther.

The man who was killed has not been identified at this time.

No officers were hurt.
