CATOOSA COUNTY, GA (WRCB) -

The intersection of Battlefield Parkway and Dietz Road in Catoosa County was packed Saturday morning, but not with your typical weekend traffic.

State representatives and local government officials were on hand to rename a portion of Battlefield Parkway in honor of Sgt. John A. Franklin, who was killed in Vietnam.

"We're so excited because this has not really happened in North Georgia before," Yvonne Morgan with the Catoosa Citizens and Veterans Memorial says.

Franklin, a Catoosa County native and graduate of Lakeview High School gave the ultimate sacrifice in 1968. Lakeview's Jr. ROTC was also on hand to honor him, so was his 90-year-old mother, Irene.

"He's my first born son," Irene says. "It means everything that they're remembering him."

That portion of Battlefield Parkway was renamed the Sergeant John A. Franklin Memorial Intersection.
