One person was killed in an officer involved shooting in Jasper, according to the TBI.

TBI spokesperson Kristin Helm says John E. Shanks was killed in an officer involved shooting on Lock and Dam Road in Jasper Saturday.

The sheriff's department was called to the scene shortly after 6 a.m. about a man asleep on the porch of a home on Lock and Dam Road.

The deputy dispatched says he heard a shot by someone on the scene. When the deputy arrived, Shanks attempted to steal a car from a nearby home and then fled into the woods.

The officer followed and when he confronted Shanks, the man showed a weapon and the deputy told him repeatedly to drop the weapon. He refused and pointed the gun at the deputy at which point the deputy shot him.

"The person pointed a fire arm at the officer and he used deadly force," says Sheriff Ronnie "Bo" Burnett.

The deputy was not injured. He was placed on paid administrative leave, per policy.

TBI does not release the names of officers involved in shootings. Agents will turn the case file over to the DA to review when completed.

Officials confirm Shanks was the same man involved in an ambulance theft in May.
