WICHITA, KS (WRCB) -- Former Chattanooga area prep basketball standout D.J. Bowles was upgraded to fair condition Wednesday night, 24 hours after he was rushed to the hospital Tuesday night following his collapse on the Koch Arena court at Wichita State University.

The former Notre Dame High and Cleveland High point guard spent the day undergoing tests at St. Francis Hospital to determine what caused him to collapse and go into cardiac arrest during a workout with the men's basketball team.

Bowles' father, Darren, told Channel 3 Eyewitness Sports early Wednesday evening that initial tests came back negative, but said many more tests remained.

911 tapes obtained by KWCH, the CBS affiliate in Wichita, revealed Bowles was resuscitated on the court by members of the Wichita State athletic training staff before being transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Wichita State University officials released the following statement Wednesday morning to update Bowles condition.

-- "I want to commend athletic trainer Todd Fagan, our athletic training staff, and emergency medical personnel, for quick and professional response exhibited in dealing with D.J.'s situation," Director of Athletics Eric Sexton said. "In addition, a thank you to our partner, Via Christi, for the care they are providing.

"I visited D.J. this morning. He is in stable condition, and will have a number of tests today. We may not know much more until we receive the results of the tests. All of our thoughts go out to D.J., his family, and our men's basketball program."

Bowles is a 6-foot-2, 175-pound freshman guard from Oldsmar Christian High School in Cleveland, Tenn.

Wichita State asks for privacy for its student-athletes, coaches and staff through the upcoming days.

Bowles signed with Wichita State last winter and just started his freshman year with the program, which advanced to the Final Four last season. He transferred from Notre Dame to Cleveland High following his freshman year of high school, then finished his prep career at Oldsmar Christian School in Tampa, Fla.

Bowles was rated as a two-star recruit by most recruiting services. He was briefly committed to Central Florida before switching to Wichita State last November.
