CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)- Setting the table for a potential race between the leaders of the County Commission and School Board, Mike Evatt has announced his candidacy for Hamilton County Circuit Court Clerk.  The office is currently held by Paula Thompson, who will not seek re-election in the August 2014 election.

Evatt is in his second year as School Board Chairman.  He was elected to the District 9 School Board position in 2010.  By announcing for the new post, Evatt said he will serve out the remainder of his term on the School Board, but cannot run for a second term next year.

A possible opponent for the Clerk post is County Commission Chairman Larry Henry.  He has shown interest in running for the position, but says he has not made a firm decision.

Evatt is the son of the late H.Q. Evatt, a longtime Hamilton County Sheriff.  He retired as a director in the school district's maintenance department, and is now self-employed as a contractor.

In a prepared statement, Evatt said, "I firmly believe my tenure as a member and current chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Education has been productive and has contributed to the growth of a school system that is poised to meet the challenges of preparing our young people for the future," he said in a statement. "I now propose to apply that same mindset of service leadership and management skills to this position."

He added, "Public service at any level has unique requirements that are non-negotiable in order to ensure a job well done. I believe that my management experiences, communication skills, and leadership abilities have prepared me to successfully meet the requirements of this office and to therefore be a viable candidate for the office of Circuit Court Clerk."
