Terrifying ride as school bus' brakes fail

Posted: Updated:

BOCA RATON, FL (WPTV) - Cameras captured a wild school bus ride in Palm Beach County, Florida. Students panicked when the brakes appeared to fail on their way home from Spanish River High School.

Video shot during the ordeal shows moments of terror as the 40 foot long school bus zooms down a busy road in south Florida moving against traffic -- without a way to stop.

"It was a very scary moment. I was so nervous about everything that was going on," said bus rider Nadya Williams.

Williams was on the bus along with three other friends heading home from Spanish River High School.

They spoke with the permission of their parents. They said there was first a noise -- then smoke -- then a brakeless free fall down the road.

"We're trying to get help and everyone is honking. Other cars, everyone is honking and waving at us like we're playing a game," said Monica Hopfensperger, another bus rider.

The school district released this statement:

"The bus driver took the proper corrective action in order to bring the bus to a full stop. The brake malfunction is under investigation."

The girls credit their bus driver for their lives.
