AAA predicts a sharp increase in Labor Day travel this year

Posted: Updated:

(NBC) Better finances on the home front mean more Americans are likely to hit the road over the upcoming Labor Day.

AAA projects at least a million more people than last year will travel over the holiday weekend this year.

The brightest spot in the economy giving the biggest boost is an improving housing market.

"For many Americans their home is their largest asset and as prices begin to rise across the country, consumers are feeling more confident about planning a vacation," says AAA's Heather Hunter.

The travel club expects 34-million Americans to journey 50 miles or more from home over Labor Day holiday, the vast majority by car.
