According to the state of Mississippi, Sheffield was on the most wanted criminals list by the state and was on probation for federal charges.

Records show in 2000 he was facing charges of illegal gun possession and cocaine distribution.

He took a plea in 2001 and was released from prison in 2008 but forbidden to travel to South Mississippi.

His last known address was in Gulfport, but it isn't known why he was in Chattanooga.

According to officers at the scene, Sheffield stated he was not going back in prison and shot himself in the neck.

Sheffield was last in a medium security prison in Yazoo City Mississippi. His probationary period was for five years.

Chattanooga police say the three officers involved in Saturday's shooting with Sheffield are on administrative leave with pay. That's standard procedure for shootings involving officers.
