UPDATE: UT gets 'smokey' with new alternate uniform

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

The University of Tennessee football program will officially unveil a new alternative uniform at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

A 'smokey' charcoal gray jersey and pants combo will offset traditional Tennessee orange numbers and some other familiar details, including checkerboard undershirts, to honor the program's tradition.

The move, which has been the subject of much speculation online over the past few weeks, comes two weeks after head coach Butch Jones hinted at subtle "special" changes to the team's traditional uniforms at UT's preseason media day.

"There may be something coming, but everything we do will respect our traditions at Tennessee," Jones said on July 31.

Adidas, the official uniform supplier for the Vols released the photo earlier Thursday, perhaps stealing some thunder from the official presentation during UT's news conference in Knoxville.

Alternative uniforms are used at the team's discretion, but it's not yet been made clear when these new uniforms may see the turf at Neyland Stadium.

UT's traditional white helmets with the orange "T" will be worn with the alternate jerseys. The standard orange "home" jerseys and white "away" uniforms will also remain and be used for the majority of the games this season.
