Crime Stoppers: THP Vehicle Smash & Grab

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

It is a certain kind of person who lives a life of crime, but even the bad guys would have to admit, it takes an unbelievable amount of gall to strike a marked police car.

"We're actually talking about an actual Tennessee Highway Patrol vehicle that was actually broken into," explained Chattanooga Police Sergeant Daniel Jones.

Even the men and women in uniform are not immune and, in this case, it did not matter that the Trooper was in a marked car! It happened Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of TJ Maxx over on Hamilton Place Boulevard.

The Trooper had gone inside the store for just a few minutes. "Obviously it didn't take them very long to go and smash and, if you will, grab," said Sgt. Jones. "But, once they got the stuff, they got right back in their vehicle and left."

The passenger side window was smashed, personal items were grabbed, quick hit. That brings us to our one and only picture from parking lot surveillance video of the getaway vehicle: a dark colored SUV.

"There's somebody out there that's bragging about this," Jones added. "'Yeah, I hit a THP car!' 'Yeah, I broke into a cop car. Yeah!' So, someone is going above and beyond, I'm sure, because they're not going to want to keep that quiet."

That's what we are counting on. And their loose lips could lead to cash money for you. Pocket the reward.

They will never know you turned them in because we will never know your identity. Besides, someone with this kind of blatant disrespect of law enforcement officers needs to be taught a lesson.

And, all of us can learn a lesson from this crime. Sgt. Jones reminds us, no matter where we have parked our vehicles, "If you have your stuff laying out in plain view for everybody to see, that one person that walks by who is a criminal, or who wants to take advantage of someone else, my just decide to break out your window and actually take it."

Up to $1,000 is waiting for the right tip. Do you know something? Call Crime Stoppers: 698-3333

As always, an officer may answer the phone, but he will never ask your identity.
