Trial starts for officers in Niota excessive force case

The trial for two Niota police officers accused of excessive force started Tuesday.

Ray Stewart claims Jonathan Scott and Keith McCarter broke several bones in his chest and arms, and injured his head.

He says it all started in April 2012 when he made a U-turn on his moped.

Stewart told investigators the officers followed him to his mobile home for the registration.

While inside, Stewart says he called 911 saying the officers were out ofline. That's when he says things turned violent and they attacked him.

"Immediately grabbed onto me and began to attack me," says Stewart. "I wentdown in a pool of blood."

Stewart was arrested and faced a dozen charges, but they've all since beendismissed.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested the officers on oppression charges.

Their trial started Tuesday in McMinn County.
