Missionary Ridge Road race carries on Dalton teen's legacy

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Saturday marked the 40th annual Missionary Ridge Road Race.

Music pounded from the speakers along the running course of one of the oldest races in the city early Saturday morning.

"Forty years of running for this one here says a lot," organizer, Mark Wisdom says. "There's a tradition and having that tradition is something we want to keep."

However, that tradition changed in 2007 when Dalton High School Runner John Bruner collapsed while on the course and passed away.

"John had a heart anomaly, he passed away of a heart attack that morning," John's father, Greg Bruner says.

Now Bruner carries on John's message, to always run.

"Running gave John tremendous confidence that he kept with him through school and many places," Bruner says.

The run benefits the Team Bruner Memorial Scholarship fund as well as the local American Red Cross.
