CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. (WXII) —A fake ghost hunter story led to the discovery of a meth operation Monday in Caldwell County, deputies said.

Sonny Clay Hyatt, 39, Thomas Glenn Imler Jr., 38, and Eric John Schmidt, 31, were arrested following a 911 call and an apartment search, WCNC reported.

Hyatt called 911 saying he got separated from his friends while they were investigating ghost stories, Caldwell County deputies said. Deputies tracked down Hyatt through his cell phone, and Hyatt said his friends got out of the woods safely and went back to his apartment.

Hyatt eventually admitted the group went into the woods to make meth out of fear of cooking the drugs in the apartment. Meth-making materials were found inside the apartment, deputies said.
