UPDATE: Domestic fight while driving leaves two dead, now identified

Posted: Updated:

Two people are dead and one other injured after an early morning wreck on Interstate 24 westbound, near mile marker 147 in Marion County.

James Wright, the sole survivor of the accident, told the Tennessee Highway Patrol that Thomas Smith and Stephanie Auburn were apparently having a domestic dispute, with Smith steering the 2000 Nissan with his knee when the accident took place.

Wright attempted to break up the fight, and the vehicle swerved off the road. The driver, Smith, overcorrected and caused the vehicle to roll into the median.

None of the vehicle's occupants were wearing safety belts, and all were ejected from the Nissan.

Smith and Auburn, both of Hixson, died from their injuries. Wright, of Lebanon, TN, was treated at Erlanger for unspecified injuries.

No citations or criminal charges have been filed.
