MURPHY, NC (WRCB) -

A Murphy man faces animal abuse charges after animals were found mistreated and abused in his care.

Investigators with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department received information that horses at a home on Harshaw Road were being mistreated.

Officials responded to the home and found three horses, a pony, and a mule near death. Investigators tried to get a warrant in time to save the horses, but one of the animals died the next day.

Investigators identified 51-year-old Jan Barnett as the owner.

He was arrested and charged with felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty as well as causing the death of an animal by starvation.

He was released on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in district court later this month.
