State patrol spokesman Gordy Wright says 1 of the children, a 6-year-old boy, later died at a hospital. A 5-year-old girl was seriously injured in the one-car wreck along Tallapoosa Highway near Cedartown Sunday morning.
Wright says a witness told troopers the driver, 42-year-old Robert Nelson Wood of Tallapoosa, pulled two children from the car and ran away.
The state patrol said he was found about three-quarters of a mile from the crash site after a manhunt for him. It wasn't immediately known whether he has an attorney.
The girl was being treated at a hospital in Chattanooga, TN.
