Man pulls children from crashed car, flees scene

CEDARTOWN, Ga. (AP) - Police say a man driving a car with two children inside crashed, pulled the kids out of the vehicle and then ran away.

State patrol spokesman Gordy Wright says 1 of the children, a 6-year-old boy, was killed and a 5-year-old girl was seriously injured in the one-car wreck Sunday morning.

Wright says a 2009 Pontiac G6 was driving along Tallapoosa Highway near Cedartown Sunday morning when it veered off the road, hit a ditch and overturned.

Wright says a witness told troopers the driver, 42-year-old Robert Nelson Wood, of Tallapoosa, pulled two children from the car and ran away.

The girl was being treated at a hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Wright says a state patrol helicopter is searching for Wood.
