PD: Murfreesboro road rage suspect wore Joker mask, flashed gun

Posted: Updated:

An incident on the streets of Murfreesboro nearly played out like a scene from an action movie Thursday, when a man wearing a Joker mask allegedly pointed a gun, after a case of road rage.

Daniel Morelock, 24, of Eagleville, said he was beyond scared when he saw the gun.

"It scared the crap out of me, as soon as he pointed it," Morelock said. "He had it pointed directly at me."

Police say it invoked fears similar to the aftermath of the Colorado theatre shooting last year.

Morelock and his friend, Ryan Black, 26, had a verbal altercation with another driver, Jordan Scott, 22. Both vehicles had their music up loud, and when the music went silent, Morelock asked a question.

"I asked if he had a Mustang GT, and he shrugged his shoulders. And I said, 'I guess it's a V6 then.' And we continue to drive down Broad Street," Morelock said.

It was only when Morelock saw Scott wearing a Joker mask, and allegedly pulled out a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, that he knew he may have been talking to the wrong guy.

"When I saw he did not shoot, I just continued to go forward, and followed him and got his license plate number," Morelock said.

According to the police report, Scott told investigators he did get into a verbal argument with the two men, because he said they were following and swerving near him. He also allegedly told officers, he showed the men the gun to "scare them."

"This is just another example of how deadly and dangerous road rage can turn into, in a matter of seconds," said Murfreesboro police spokesman Sgt. Kyle Evans.

Police said wearing a Joker mask is no laughing matter, especially after the deadly Colorado theatre shooting, during a premiere of the latest Batman movie.

"Anyone seeing someone in a Joker mask, would immediately make that connection," Evans said. "The victims in this case were in reasonable fear of bodily injury and death."

When police searched Scott's vehicle, they found the Joker mask, a loaded magazine and a handgun with a bullet in the chamber, but that's not all.

"He was also found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia, and a small amount of marijuana," Evans said.

And to make matters worse, Scott did not have a gun carry permit for that loaded gun, according to police.

Scott now faces two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon with intent and possession of marijuana.

He's scheduled to appear in court on the charges Sept. 3.

Channel 4 News attempted to reach Scott for his side of the story, but he didn't return our calls.
