Boater killed after striking low-hanging power line at TVA plant
DECATUR, AL (AP) — Authorities have identified the angler who died when a bass boat hit a low-hanging power line across the Tennessee River in north Alabama.
Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn says 65-year-old Anthony Szozda of Athens died in the accident, which happened Tuesday afternoon.
Chunn says the man was sitting in the passenger seat beside the driver when the boat struck a line that was hanging just a few feet above the water.
The Decatur Daily reports that the power line runs to the Tennessee Valley Authority's Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant at Athens.
Police say TVA was working on the line before the accident.
A TVA statement calls the accident "unusual and unfortunate." The utility says it's trying to understand what happened.
