JASPER, TN (AP) - It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now trees planted around Jasper's courthouse square pose a problem.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, city leaders are going to try trimming the Chinese ginkgo trees, rather than removing them.

Mayor Paul Evans looked extensively before finding a qualified trimmer who will reduce the bulk of the 30 trees for a $150 fee. Evans said the contractor is doing the city a favor.

Some merchants have said the trees need to be cut down, but the city will first try removing bottom branches to get the foliage above downtown merchants' windows.
