Amazon adding 5,000 new jobs across the US, including Chattanooga and Murfreesboro

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

As Chattanooga prepares for President Barack Obama to speak at the Amazon FulFillment Center, the online giant Amazon tells Channel 3 that they will be adding more than 5,000 new full-time jobs across the United States.

"We're hiring more than 5,000 people to join our team and help us continue to innovate and serve our customers," said Dave Clark, vice president of worldwide operations and customer service at Amazon. "We're focused on sustained innovation across Amazon and want to help our employees succeed."

According to Amazon, the positions pay 30% more than traditional retail jobs and include comprehensive benefits beginning on an employee's first day, including healthcare, 401K and company stock awards.

The new jobs include picking, packing and shipping customer orders while working with high-end, state of the art technology.

Amazon employs over 20,000 full-time employees in its U.S. fulfillment centers, with four in the state of Tennessee; Chattanooga, Charleston, Lebanon and Murfreesboro.

Amazon shares hit a record high Friday after quarterly results showed investor optimism, despite the company's second-quarter net-loss and a weaker growth in the international market.

The stock rose 2.7% to $311.70 Friday afternoon after the record price of $313.62 shown earlier in the day.
