More stolen checks reported in Chattanooga

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Chattanooga Police have been on high alert after nearly 100 complaints of check fraud in the area.

"This has been happening all over the city," Officer Nathan Hartwig says.

It's the same problem the city of East Ridge has been dealing with for months. Now the two agencies are joining together to tell the public to be on the lookout.

"We have had enough complaints come through that it has become an issue and we need to make the public aware. The best thing to do is do not leave checks in your mailbox," Hartwig says.

The Jones family on Glen Oaks Place says the $30 check they used to pay the sewage bill was paid, but somehow thieves got the numbers from the check and wrote one for themselves for more than $300.

"The number that showed up was still in my check book. I had never written it," Jim Jones says.

Police are looking into where the checks were cashed and how. So far most are being used at a Walmart Store off Brainerd Road. Investigators are urging businesses to use better practices.

Jones, who has since recovered the funds, has been through the hassle of changing checking accounts, stopping payments on other checks, and getting his life back in order.

He says since this incident, he's not leaving any payments in the mailbox.

Both agencies are working on leads and say they will be reviewing surveillance footage.

Police again urge people to not place checks in mailboxes. Use the post office or pay in person if you can.
