Chattanooga city council prepares for new budget

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

It will be another week before the Berke administration presents its first budget since taking office.

In May, Berke asked for more time building the budget to adjust  for the major changes to the city's department structure. The city council granted him 90 days.

Today, council members sat in on an education session to prepare for the budget process, which will officially begin next week when the Berke administration presents its plan.

Chief Operating Officer Andrew Kean says this budget will not look like any other.

"Traditional budgeting is taking last year's budget, knock the dust off of it, maybe talk about adds or cuts ... Dollars to support those results," says Kean.

Channel 3 asked Kean if the budget could include a tax increase. He would not answer, saying all details will be left to next week when he expects "robust discussion" among council members who will have to approve the budget.
