Police investigate string of check thefts in East Ridge

Posted: Updated:

Mary Whitmore paid her rent for the month of June like she normally does by leaving her check in the mailbox and waiting for the post office to mail it to the landlord.

She was in for a shock when she started getting bank statements saying she had over draft fees.

"On the bank statement it said I went to Walmart in Hixson and I've never been to Walmart in Hixson."

Whitmore had lost hundreds of dollars after someone stole the check out of the mailbox, duplicated the numbers and then cashed the check taking the money straight from her account.

She isn't alone.

Channel 3 uncovered police reports that shows this has happened at least 16 different times in the last few months in the city of East Ridge. That's just the stolen checks that have been reported.

Paul Henze in the Mission Oaks neighborhood was one of at least five homes hit by check thieves.

He says the original check he wrote for a little over $30 turned into nearly five hundred dollars on his statement. Again, his check was cashed at a Walmart store.

"It is not that hard this day and time to duplicate them, coming up with routing numbers and pass them back through."

Like others, he went through the headache of getting is accounts back in line.

East Ridge police have not named any suspects but urge residents to not leave checks for payments in mailboxes.
