Volunteers needed with South Pittsburg cleanup

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH PITTSBURG, TN (WRCB) -

"We still have a lot of work that needs to be done," says South Pittsburg Firefighter Corey Comstock.

A command post is set up at the fire department to accept volunteers to help clean up after last week's damaging flash floods.

Comstock says they need more volunteers.

"Mostly the mud, the big debris in the yards. If there's damage in their homes. Cleaning up inside," says Comstock.

He hopes Saturday will be a big day for volunteer turnout and a church group will be here cooking for and feeding anyone who does.

Comstock says one reason for the downturn in volunteers may be that people are still unaware that so much more needs to be done even though volunteers have already helped at more than 30 homes.

"They may think that it's already all cleaned up.It was worse than what it looks like now. It's been a good cleanup on the streets," said Comstock.

But for some homes off the beaten path it's a different story. Linda Russell and her husband Wayne live a few miles from their downtown business that was damaged. The store is back up and running, but reminders of the flood remain around their house.

"It's washed the creek line back out in back of the house. We have trees down in the creek from where the creek got up so high," says Russell.

Trees have also toppled onto the property.

"We have some big rocks that the creek has put up into the back yard, also," adds Russell.

Rocks that are much heavier than they look. Insurance won't pay to remove the debris since none of it damaged the home. Out of pocket expense to remove it all could run into the thousands.

But Russell is thankful for those who have already helped others in the community.

"God has really blessed us with the volunteers and the help we've had. He really has, but we need more," says Russell.

"We appreciate all the help we can get," urges Comstock.

If you would like to volunteer contact the South Pittsburg Fire Department or simply go there to sign in. The hours are 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. Saturday as well as Monday - Wednesday of next week.
