Girls Inc. receives grant from NASA

Posted: Updated:

Girls, Inc. of Chattanooga is lifting off with a new grant.

NASA has awarded the organization money to encourage girls to study math and engineering.

Girls Incorporated's mission is to teach girls to be strong, smart, and bold and they are doing just that with a new grant from NASA.

Girls Inc. added the NASA curriculum in its "build it bolder" summer camp for teen girls age 13 to 16.

They learn about Newton's Law and how energy contributes to what happens in space and on earth.

Coordinators say the program encourages girls to think outside the box.

"NASA would like to encourage girls to go into engineering, math science etc. so this is building on the STEM initiative in the country, to encourage girls here in Chattanooga to get involved," says Nancy Olenchek.

"It's really teaching me how to keep on trying and to never give up because a lot of these projects here are kind tough and I keep on learning and stuff," says Ebony Boston.

Girls Incorporated's summer camps reach hundred of girls throughout the summer, and they are looking forward reaching more girl throughout the year.
