Signal Mountain's W road is open, after weeks of construction to repair and stabilize the road, perched on the side of the rugged landscape.

The opening comes a week earlier than projected, which will ease the congestion residents feel with one main route up and down the mountain.

The road was closed in early April, with "significant" cracks in the roadway and other safety-related concerns. Shifts in the underlying geological foundation of the roadway prompted the repair work.

The repairs to the 120-year-old road cost taxpayers about $1.3 million.
