Next Steps 2 Hope project is #TeamAustin

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Thursday's ceremony was powerful to see all the volunteers, family and friends that came out to support Andrew and Tori Smith. Among those that came out, was Austin Whitten. Whitten is next in line to receive a few upgrades that will make the transition from the car to his home a little easier.

"Steps 2 Hope" is gearing up to help Austin Whitten who was paralyzed last summer in a swimming accident.

"He did a belly flop and hit the water breaking C6 and C7," said Mark Wilson, Steps 2 Hope.

Friends, family and community members will focus on building Austin a carport attached to his home.

"We need to move a couple things and put a roof in place and so he has somewhere to park and get in dry when it is raining," said Wilson.

"We don't have any coverage outside of our house. So when he gets in or out or goes anywhere around the house he gets soaking wet from the rain," said Taylor Whitten, Austin's Brother.

A fundraising event will be planned around September. Steps 2 Hope's goal is to complete "Team Austin" by the end of 2013
