Spelling counts, especially on road signs

No, this isn't the proper spelling of Ephrata, PA. No, this isn't the proper spelling of Ephrata, PA.

(WGAL) If you're driving on Route 222 south in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, you might notice something wrong with one of the road signs.

A viewer spotted the sign for the town of Ephrata... unfortunately the sign spells it "Epharta."

The sign is at mile 43 between Reading and Ephrata.

A PennDOT official said the department is aware of the error, and a repair has been ordered.

Ephrata Mayor Ralph Mowen said he wasn't aware of the misspelled sign, but didn't appreciate the mistake.

"I think it's pretty poor," he told a local newspaper. "It's not like we're a new town in the state. We've been here for 200 years."

Ephrata was spelled correctly in the original order for the sign, Crochunis said.

In fact, the employee who sent the order to the manufacturing facility used to live in Ephrata, an official said said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says the error was made in its sign shop and no one caught it. It will cost between $800 and $1,200 to fix.
