UF football player charged with DUI on a scooter

Posted: Updated:

GAINESVILLE, FL (WRCB) - A University of Florida football player was arrested over the weekend for DUI on a scooter.

Grant Van Aman, a freshman walk-on Florida punter, was arrested early Saturday morning and charged with driving under the influence.

Van Aman, who is 19, was arrested by Gainesville Police after running a stop sign on his scooter.

Allegedly, he ran the stop sign early Saturday morning, right in front of a Gainesville Police officer who was preparing to travel through the intersection.

When Van Aman spotted the police car, he swerved and almost fell off his scooter, according to the police report.

He recovered, steadying the motor scooter, and pulled out his cell phone  and begin to drive away.

The police officer then followed the freshman to a nearby parking garage and noted  "a very strong odor of alcoholic beverages" and described Van Aman's eyes as "watery, bloodshot and extremely dilated."

Van Aman turns 20 in September, reportedly refused multiple sobriety tests and told police he'd never been to Gainesville before.

He also told police he had not been drinking, but admited to being at a local bar.

Van Aman was reportedly booked into the Alachua County Jail around 4:30 a.m. that morning.

Discipline from Gator Head Coach Will Muschamp and the team has not yet been determined.
