Council awards settlement to cop shot in the line of duty

Posted: Updated:

It's been two years since Chattanooga police officer Lorin Johnston was shot, while responding to a robbery.

Johnston still serves on the force, despite dealing with scars from that day.

With a unanimous vote, the Chattanooga City Council agreed to award police officer Lorin Johnston with a $32,000 injury settlement.

"It's a win, win situation for both sides," says Councilman Russell Gilbert.

Johnston was shot in a botched robbery on Brainerd Road more than two years ago.

Sergeant Tim Chapin responded to the same robbery.

Chapin was shot and killed by Jesse Mathews, who is serving a life sentence.

Deputy city attorney Phil Noblett says Tuesday's vote took two years because Johnston was moving through the process of receiving a permanent partial impairment status.

"It's a full and final settlement for his permanent and partial disability," says Noblett.

As with any city employee injury settlement, attorneys for both sides worked with the city's insurance company to agree on an amount.

But Councilman Moses Freeman says this case stands out because of the tremendous sacrifice Johnston made and continues to make with his service.

"We wanted to let him know and let the community know that we stand behind policemen and stand by anyone who gets hurt on the line of duty," Freeman says. "And, this was one way of doing that."

Johnston was not present for the vote.

City officials say there is still paperwork to do, but Johnston should receive the settlement in the next month.
