Smokies' Foothills Parkway: new bridge completed, but five more to go
WEARS VALLEY, TN (News Sentinel) — They call it Bridge 2. That's it, just Bridge 2.
It's an engineering marvel with a deceptively simple name, and with a price tag of $25.7 million, it didn't come cheap.
On Monday, officials with Great Smoky Mountains National Park held a ribbon-cutting on the Foothills Parkway to celebrate the completion of Bridge 2, one of nine bridges that will eventually span the rugged 1.6-mile section of the parkway between Walland and Wears Valley known as the "Missing Link."
Congress authorized the Foothills Parkway in 1944 as a 72-mile scenic highway that would showcase Great Smoky Mountains from the outside looking in. So far, only three segments totaling 22.5 miles between Cosby and U.S. Highway 129 at Chilhowee Lake have been completed owing to high construction costs and environmental challenges.
