A Georgia man drowned while swimming at Little River Canyon National Preserve Park Saturday evening.

Sheriff's dispatch responded to the incident around 7:50 p.m. at Martha's Falls.

Divers located 19-year-old Ricardo Perez from Rome, Georgia in nine feet of water.

Park officials say Perez and his friends tried to swim across Little River. Perez slipped under the water and his friends tried, but were unable, to find him.

Rescuers used a low angle haul system to get Perez out.

Park superintendent Gail Bishop says this is the first drowning of 2013, although there have been four rescues.

Fischer Rescue Squad, Adamsburg Volunteer Fire Department, DeKalb Ambulance Service, Cherokee County Rescue Squad and Alabama State Troopers assisted with the recovery.

The National Park Service warns people not to cross the Little River because of the underlying force of the water generated by movement down the rocky falls and ledges.
