Father's day is Sunday, June 16 and it's not too late to get dad a last-minute gift. But what exactly does he want?

The National Retail Federation (NRF) projects the most popular gifts this year will rank in this order:

  1. Special outing (sporting event, dinner, etc.)
  2. Electronic gadget (GPS, tablet, etc.)
  3. Clothing (yes, neckties included)
  4. Gift cards
  5. Home improvement and gardening tools

The NRF predicts the average person will spend $119.84 on dad this year, up from $117.14 in 2012. Total spending for Father's Day is expected to surpass $13 billion.

Consumers will mostly stick to the traditional gifts for dad, but some will splurge on clothing, electronic items, and special outings.

According to the survey, those celebrating Father's Day will spend:

  • $2.5 billion on a special outing, such as a sporting event or dinner
  • $1.7 billion on a new electronic gadget, such as a tablet or GPS system
  • $1.8 billion on clothing.  Dad can also expect plenty of gift cards; families will shell out
  • $1.8 billion on gift cards
  • $755 million on home improvement and gardening tools
  • $710 millions on sporting goods
  • $707 million on personal care items
  • $592 million on automotive accessories
