Hamilton County Mayor Coppinger presents budget, no tax increase

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger has presented a no-tax increase $664 million dollar budget to the Hamilton County Commission Thursday, with $393 million dollars dedicated to education.

Mayor Coppinger described his budget as "a fiscally conservative budget."

With projected revenues to be flat this year for Hamilton County, a one percent increase in property tax which will only produce $1.7 million dollars in additional revenue.

The mayor does expect constitutional offices to see a 9 percent increase in excess fees.

Mayor Coppinger pointed out health care insurance costs actually increased to 10 percent.

With insurance costs and changes from the Affordable Health Care Act, Hamilton County employees will all be under the county's co-insurance health plan, which Coppinger predicts will result in a $1.8 million dollars in insurance savings.

Coppinger displayed his support for the sheriff's department by a budgeted purchase of 30 new patrol cars.

Chairman Larry Henry thanked Mayor Coppinger for his balanced no tax increase budget.

The commission will vote on the proposed budget June 27th.
