Former Howard High principal accepts position in Mayor Berke's administration
Former Howard High School principal, Paul Smith, will now serve as Public Safety Coordinator under Mayor Andy Berke.
Smith will be responsible for helping implement Berke's comprehensive public safety plan.
Smith has served as principal of Howard High since 2007. He has also served as assistant principal of Orchard Knob Middle and a teacher at Tyner High.
"Public Safety is my number one priority," said Mayor Berke. "We have developed a comprehensive public safety plan that includes innovative initiatives and new approaches to make our streets safer. With his experience and leadership skills, Paul Smith is the right person to help implement this plan."
Berke's safety plan was announced May 17 and include a crime scorecard, the formation of a coordinated Public Safety Council, and a study of the Chattanooga Police Department to evaluate and determine best practices.
The newly implemented Public Safety Coordinator will be responsible for providing opportunities for at-risk youth, growing community partnerships, improving data collection efforts internal to city government and providing support to community agencies to allow for coordinated data collection, monitoring progress of the public safety plan, and providing regular updates to Berke.
In the coming months, Berke will introduce more aspects of the public safety plan.
