McMinn County cleaning up after strong storms

Posted: Updated:

ATHENS, TN (WRCB) -- Vibrant flowers glistening in sun light, lawn mowers off in the distance and birds chirping from above. A far cry from what it was like in Athens Wednesday afternoon.

King Street resident Richard Budds said, "Lightning and thunder so bad it was shaking the house. Then it started hailing for about five minutes, penny sized hail. It just came down started pouring bad. I never seen rain like that."

Powerful winds and heavy rain ripped through McMinn County. King Street was a mess.

Up the street, from a distance was a friendly looking house but the minor touch up paint the white fence needs is only a pebble in the river of problems the flash floods caused for Robert McCowan's sister-in-law.

"She heard a racket, and it kind of made a boom sound," said McCowan.

Officials said flood waters caused her foundation to shift. The evidence was clear, miniature sink holes surrounded the foundation.

McCowan said, "She showed me where the dirt had fallen and the foundation part."

Fire crews told her it was unsafe to stay, that's when the local Red Cross and family stepped in.

"It hurts you know what I mean, it hurts because you know how hard it is to get flood insurance so it hurts but we'll do everything we can to help her. We'll take care of her," said McCowan.
