Ooltewah's Griffith wins TN Junior PGA Championship

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (TPGA/WRCB) -- Ooltewah's Samantha Griffith won the 2013 Tennessee Junior PGA Championship presented by Under Armour and Hotel Fitness Tuesday at Brentwood Country Club.

The win qualifies the Owls' rising senior for the upcoming Junior PGA Championship, which will run July 30-August 2 at Trump National Golf Club near Washington, D.C.

Griffith shot a final-round 74 for a two-day total of 3-over 145 to beat Allyson Dunn (Kingsport) and Katie Story (Dickson) by four strokes.

Brentwood's Dawson Armstrong posted a final-round 67 for a two-day total of 137 to win the boys division by three strokes.

Chattanooga's Scott Stevens finished fourth, five shots back. Fellow Chattanoogan Patrick McDonald tied for ninth at 144.

The Junior PGA Championship has traditionally been a stepping-stone for many of today's PGA and LPGA Tour professionals as well as current collegiate stars. Past Junior PGA Championship competitors who have gone on to successful professional careers include: In-Bee Park, Jim Furyk, Luke Guthrie, Trevor Immelman, Cristie Kerr, Justin Leonard, Michelle McGann, Phil Mickelson, Grace Park, Dottie Pepper, Jordan Spieth, David Toms, Alexis Thompson. Michelle Wie and Tiger Woods.
