Volkswagen video highlights Chattanooga and the USA National Cycling Championship

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Nearly one week after the City of Chattanooga hosted the Volkswagen 2013 USA National Cycling Championships Road Race and Time Trials, the automaker released a video showcasing the city and the automaker's commitment to cycling.

In the video, a "twitter ride" is shown, where local cyclists got a chance to ride alongside the pros through the city. The ride took place between the time trial and the road race, on a day where the pro cyclists took what is called an "active rest day," meaning they weren't riding at race-pace tempo.

The event marked the first time that both mens' and womens' events were held at the same venue and with equal presence. Disabled cyclists, using handcycles, also competed on similar circuits, adding another layer to the races for fans.

Chattanooga boasts an active cycling community, on the road and on the trails.

Volkswagen sponsors a road cycling team, partnering with the local VW dealer, Village Volkswagen. The team competes in regional events throughout the southeast.

Near the Volkswagen Chattanooga assembly plant is the Enterprise South Nature Park, built on the ground of the old Volunteer Ammunitions Plant. The park consists of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, and is quickly becoming a favored destination for the fat-tired cyclists.

Chattanooga will again host the USA National Cycling Championships Road Race and Time Trials for 2014 and 2015, much to the delight of cycling fans in the southeast.

The downtown races did, however, meet with some displeasure among some residents and business, primarily due to the necessary road closures.

Hold on. The heat and humidity are going to continue through the weekend. Today, look for a high of 95 and a heat index near 100. We won't see the same coverage of storms that we saw last night, but with this much heat and humidity in place you never want to completely rule out one or two storms breaking through.More
