6 states team up to reduce traffic fatalities

Posted: Updated:

State leaders are hoping to continue the downward trend in the number of traffic fatalities with a summer enforcement campaign.

Friday kicked off  Hands Across the Border.

Six states, including Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama , team up to crack down on drunk driving and other traffic violations.

Friday three checkpoints were set up. One was near the East Ridge flea market, where officers were stopping drivers with three things in mind.

"We are determined to save lives. We are determined to get the drunk drivers off the street. We are determined to make sure that those who don't want to buckle up, start buckling up," says Captain Charles Lowery Jr.

The campaign continues through labor day.
