Scouts honor fallen vets at National Cemetery

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB)  --  Hundreds of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts gathered at the National Cemetery Saturday morning to pay homage to those who served our country.

The Chattanooga Choo Choo Chorus kicked off the event; it was followed by a 21 Gun Solute.

Veterans like Hardwick Caldwell watched with pride.

"Inspirational, it's almost tearful seeing all these people," he says.

One by one the scouts set out across the cemetery, placing an American flags at each one of the more than 50,000 grave markers.

"This is an opportunity for us to honor our fallen veterans and heroes in the Chattanooga area," Adrian Hackett says.

Hackett says many young Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts grow up to serve our country in the armed forces. For many of them, it starts here.

"They can look at the men and women who served our country over the years and they can also get some time to learn about paying back to the community, serving the community," Hackett says.
